Two Cheap Performance Upgrades
Looking for some cheap performance upgrades for your Volkswagen, well read on. Here are the two of the cheapest performance parts that; you can do yourself and will make the biggest impact for the least amount of money.
The first item to tackle is the air intake system, and this is a very easy do it yourself job. So if your wanting a better throttle response and a nice growl under the bonnet, then you’ve found your first cheap performance upgrade and you can tackle this upgrade in two ways.
1. The easiest and cheapest way will be to change just the stock air filter to an aftermarket one. This is a very easy task of removing the stock air filter from your VW air box and replacing it with the aftermarket one, simple!
A slightly more expensive way is to remove all the stock air box and replace it with a cold air intake kit. Takes a bit longer to fit, and slightly more expensive. Do a search on eBay to check out prices and to see what available.
Both these upgrades will release more power, not a huge amount but in my experience much better pick up and a saving in fuel. Another great advantage with both these items is there are no more filters to buy, they are re-usable! All you have to do is simply remove the filter, wash with water until clean, let it stand to dry, re-oil, and back on it goes! That’s saving you money every time you have a service.
The second performance upgrade is the suspension.
For a start any upgrade to your Volkswagen’s original suspension will show a drastic improvement in handling. And the cheapest place to start is with the strut towers.
Basically when you turn into the corner, the strut towers on your VW don’t move together, they will move independently. This movement is stress. So, when your car leans in the bends, different stresses will affect each strut tower which will move.To reduce this flex in your car, you fit a strut brace.
Installing a strut brace is very easy. You just lift up the bonnet, unbolt the nuts on top of your struts fit the strut brace in place over the studs, replace and do up the nuts very simple and very DIY. To find a cheap strut brace, eBay is again an excellent place start.
The whole front of the car now disperses the energy of a bump far more evenly and when cornering, there will be much less lean of the car. There are also rear strut braces, if you want to stiffen up the back end, these are usually around the same price as a front.
So there you have it, two cheap DIY upgrades to get you started and make driving your Volkswagen a lot more fun to drive.
